Mother and Daughter

Written for JOURN 333 (Photojournalism) Research Assignment 6.

I absolutely adore this picture. Jackie Kennedy and her daughter Caroline sit on the step in Massachusetts, with JFK in the background sitting in an easy chair. It was taken by JFK’s personal photographer, Jacques Lowes. Mrs. Kennedy has a profoundly dignified poise, while Caroline looks up to her with an expression of excitement. Do you see the I Can Fly book on her lap?

To me, this is the epitome of relationships. While it is obviously posed, it reflects a reality — this mother and daughter are really close. Caroline s the eldest of John Kennedy’s children, and the first successful pregnancy / birth following a miscarriage and then still birth. Then consider Mrs. Kennedy’s devotion to her family, even with the White House responsibilities. I would say that Caroline, and later John, meant a lot to her.
